"For the first time the U.S. military has shot down a ballistic missile with an airbourne laser beam. The experiment, conducted off the California coast, was to demonstrate the future of defence technology. From the moment the missile was launched, it took the jumbo-jet mounted laser, just two minutes to destroy. The revolutionary use of laser beams is seen as extremely attractive in missile defens More.. More..e, as it has the potential to attack multiple targets at the speed of light, and is far cheaper than current systems.

Re: From vintage sci-fi to reality:
I thought this had been done before. Maybe not with a large ICBM?
And is it "the speed of light" or "two minutes"? Because two minutes per missile can be a very long time as 20 are coming at you. The video shows about 16 seconds of actual laser contact. Wonder if it took 2 minutes to come into range? 16 seconds per target is not bad, assuming you could immediately hit another target with no cooldown or power regen. So many questions!
Seems like holding that beam on a fast-moving object would be a huge challenge. Must be that the power supply needed to make the laser hot enough to instantly burn a hole in something is too big and heavy to be airborne. What if they put the whole getup in a massive cargo plane like a C-5 or... hey this is all starting to sound familiar!!

OMG I haven't seen that one in years, I gotta find it:
Seriously this is what they have been dreaming of for decades I'm sure- accuracy, efficiency without all the muss and fuss of collateral damage. Laser-wielding robots... they are right around the corner. Next stop:
